NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is a military alliance created in 1949. In 2026 it has 32 members. Finland joined in 2023 and Sweden in 2024 — the two newest flags on the map.

Article 5 says an armed attack against one member is considered an attack against all. It has been invoked once, after 11 September 2001. It is a political and military promise, not an automatic missile launch.

NATO is not the European Union. Several EU countries are not in NATO, and several NATO countries (the United States, Canada, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, Norway) are not EU members. Ukraine is a partner, not a member, in 2026.
