What is the Commonwealth?
The Commonwealth of Nations is a voluntary club of 56 members, most of them former British territories. It is not the EU and not a military alliance.
The Commonwealth of Nations is a voluntary association of 56 members. Most were once part of the British Empire; a few (Mozambique, Rwanda, Gabon, Togo) were not. The Head of the Commonwealth is King Charles III — a symbolic role, not a day-to-day government.
Sixteen members are Commonwealth realms: they keep the same monarch as their own head of state (for example the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica). Most other members are republics with their own presidents.
The Commonwealth is not a customs union and not NATO. It runs games (the Commonwealth Games), scholarships and diplomatic meetings. Members can leave (the Irish Free State path is historical; Zimbabwe left and later applied to return). Gabon and Togo joined in 2022.
