Richest countries by GDP
Largest economies by total GDP: United States, China, then Germany, Japan and India on most 2026 IMF-style lists. GDP per person tells a different story (Luxembourg, Singapore).
“Richest country” is two different quizzes. Total GDP measures the size of the economy. The United States is first; China is second. Germany, Japan, India and the United Kingdom usually fill the next slots on IMF World Economic Outlook tables for 2026.
GDP per capita (per person) ranks small, high-income places first: Luxembourg, Singapore, Ireland (the last two need a footnote about multinationals), Switzerland, Norway, the US. India is a top-five total economy and still middle-income per person.
GDP is not happiness, equality or military power. It misses unpaid work and counts some damage as growth. Use it as a size stick, then read the inflation and GDP explainers.
