A government type describes who holds power and how it is passed on. A democracy gives citizens a real say, usually through elections. A republic has a head of state who is not a hereditary monarch. A country can be both (India, the United States, Germany).

A constitutional monarchy (UK, Japan, Sweden, Canada, Australia) keeps a king or queen with limited political power; elected parliaments govern. An absolute monarchy concentrates power in the palace (Saudi Arabia is the usual textbook example).

Federal systems (USA, India, Germany, Australia) split power between a centre and states. Unitary systems (France, Japan, New Zealand) keep more power at the centre. These words can stack: India is a federal democratic republic.
