In the United States, Canada, and many places, 911 is the emergency number. The UK, Ireland, and some others use 999 (and 112). Most of the EU uses 112. Australia uses 000. India uses 112. Learn the local number before you need it — roaming phones still have to reach a local network.
Use emergency lines for life-threatening events, not for lost luggage arguments. Many countries also have a non-emergency police number.
