Form 1098-T: tuition statement US students get for taxes

Form 1098-T is a Tuition Statement eligible US schools send so students or parents can review education tax benefits (such as the American Opportunity Credit or Lifetime Learning Credit). It is not FAFSA and not a refund cheque. IRS Publication 970 is the official explainer. GKSchools does not invent credit dollar caps, income phase-outs or a fake 2026 filing date.

Why US students open this page

“1098-T” is a January–April US search spike with tax-software advertisers — higher CPC than exam GK — if the page stays a true IRS explainer.

Who sends it

Eligible educational institutions send 1098-T to the student. Box amounts are what the school reports, not a finished tax credit.

Who claims a credit

Usually the person who claims the student as a dependent — IRS rules, not the school’s marketing.

Software vs IRS

Tax software reads 1098-T; the law is still IRS.gov. We do not sell tax prep.

Official sources

Changing dates, fees, award amounts and cutoffs stay on these sites. GKSchools does not invent them.
