529 college savings plans: what US families search

A 529 plan is a state-sponsored education savings plan with federal (and often state) tax rules. It is not FAFSA, not a loan, and not a Pell Grant. Investor.gov and IRS Publication 970 explain the idea. GKSchools does not invent contribution caps, state deductions or a fake 2026 gift-tax number.

Why US students open this page

“529 plan” is a high-intent US family search with financial advertisers. The landing must stay educational — we do not sell a 529.

Two common flavors

Education savings accounts (invest) and prepaid tuition plans. Your state’s site lists what it offers.

Qualified expenses

IRS rules cover tuition and more in Pub 970 / 529 Q&As. Room and board has tests. Do not invent a gadget list.

FAFSA treatment

How 529s count on FAFSA depends on owner and current federal methodology — read StudentAid.gov, not a 2015 blog.

Official sources

Changing dates, fees, award amounts and cutoffs stay on these sites. GKSchools does not invent them.
