What is democracy?

Democracy means people have a real say in who governs them — usually through free elections, rights and the ability to change the government without a coup.

Democracy is a way of ruling in which power comes from the people. In a modern state that usually means regular, competitive elections, the right to criticise the government, and a peaceful path to lose power. The word is Greek: demos (people) + kratos (rule).

Direct democracy (a whole citizen body voting on every law) is rare at national scale. Representative democracy elects parliaments or presidents to decide in between elections. Liberal democracy adds courts, a free press and minority rights so a 51% vote cannot erase the other 49%.

Elections alone are not enough if only one name can win, or if critics disappear. This is a civics page, not a campaign. Pair it with types of government and the UN human-rights idea (the Universal Declaration of 1948).
