FIFA World Cup 2026 rules — the map students need

World Cup matches use the IFAB Laws of the Game. A group match can end in a draw. A knockout that is level after 90 minutes typically goes to extra time (two periods of 15 minutes) and then kicks from the penalty mark if still level. VAR at FIFA tournaments can support decisions on goals, penalties, direct red cards and mistaken identity. Yellow-card accumulations and any reset before the final are written in that cup’s regulations — do not memorise a rumour.

FAQs

Can a World Cup group match end in a draw?

Yes. Both teams take one point.

What happens if a knockout is level after 90 minutes?

Extra time, then penalties if still level — under the Laws and that cup’s regulations.

Is VAR the same as cricket DRS?

No. VAR is a football video-support protocol. Teams do not wave a review card as in DRS.
