Direct Subsidized vs Unsubsidized student loans (USA)
Direct Subsidized and Direct Unsubsidized Loans are federal student loans from the US Department of Education, usually after you file FAFSA. Subsidized loans can have the government pay interest in some in-school periods; unsubsidized loans accrue interest while you study. GKSchools does not invent this year’s rate, origination fee or annual limits — those are on StudentAid.gov. This page is not a lender.
Why US students open this page
US families searching “subsidized vs unsubsidized loan” are in a borrowing decision. Loan advertisers bid more here than on Hindi exam GK — the page must stay an accurate explainer.
Subsidized
Need-based undergraduate Direct Loans. Interest may not be charged to you during qualifying in-school, grace or deferment periods — current rules on StudentAid.gov.
Unsubsidized
Not need-based in the same way. Interest usually starts accruing after disbursement. Undergraduates and many graduate students can receive them if eligible.
Not PLUS
Parent PLUS and Grad PLUS are different federal loans with a credit check. Compare the award letter: grants first, then student Direct Loans, then PLUS.
Official sources
Changing dates, fees, award amounts and cutoffs stay on these sites. GKSchools does not invent them.

FAQs
Is a Direct Loan a Pell Grant?

Do I apply separately from FAFSA?
You usually start with FAFSA. The school packages Direct Loans on the award letter; you accept what you need.
What is the interest rate this year?
StudentAid.gov publishes current Direct Loan rates. We do not invent them.
Can I take only the subsidized part?
If the school offers both, you can often decline unsubsidized amounts. Ask the aid office before you sign.
