What is GPA? How US students calculate grade point average

GPA means grade point average. Most US high schools report an unweighted 4.0 scale (A = 4.0) and many also report a weighted GPA that adds extra points for Honors, AP or IB. Colleges read the transcript and the school profile, not a TikTok converter. GKSchools teaches the idea — your counselor’s scale is official.

Why US students open this page

“How to calculate GPA” is a perennial US student search from middle school through college applications.

Unweighted 4.0

A typical letter map is A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0. Plus/minus policies differ by school.

Weighted GPA

Many schools add 0.5 or 1.0 for AP/Honors. There is no single national weighted scale.

College GPAs

Universities often recalculate using only academic courses. NCAA and scholarship programs may use their own formulas.

Changing dates, fees, award amounts and cutoffs stay on these sites. GKSchools does not invent them.

FAQs

Is 4.0 the highest possible GPA?

On an unweighted 4.0 scale, yes. Weighted scales can print numbers above 4.0. Colleges know the difference if they have your school profile.

Do colleges use weighted or unweighted GPA?

It depends. Many read both, or recalculate. Always send the official transcript.

Does GPA include PE or art?

High-school cumulative GPA often includes electives; college recalculations may drop some. Ask your counselor.

Can GKSchools compute my official GPA?

No. Only your school’s SIS/transcript is official. We teach the method.
