Lok Sabha seats
Lok Sabha has 543 elected seats. Two nominated Anglo-Indian seats were removed by the 104th Amendment. Rajya Sabha is 245 (233+12). GKSchools.
Students still meet two numbers in old guides: 545 and 543. The number to write now is 543 elected members. The President used to nominate two members from the Anglo-Indian community under Article 331. The 104th Constitutional Amendment ended that nomination.
Article 81 sets the elected design: not more than 530 members from the states and not more than 20 from the union territories — a constitutional maximum of 550 elected seats. Today’s actual elected house is 543. Do not confuse the ceiling with the current strength.
The Rajya Sabha is a different house: Article 80 allows a maximum of 250 (up to 238 elected representatives of states and UTs plus 12 nominated). The working strength taught in 2026 classrooms is 245 — 233 elected and 12 nominated. Delimitation after the next census is a legal process; we do not invent 2026 new seat totals.
Key points
- Current Lok Sabha elected seats: 543.
- Anglo-Indian nominated pair (Article 331) — removed by the 104th Amendment. Do not add +2 anymore.
- Article 81 ceiling: ≤530 from states + ≤20 from UTs = 550 elected maximum.
- Rajya Sabha now: 245 = 233 elected + 12 nominated by the President.
- Rajya Sabha constitutional maximum: 250 (Article 80).
- Lok Sabha is the House of the People; term up to five years unless dissolved earlier.
- Rajya Sabha is a permanent house; roughly one-third of members retire every second year.
- Money Bills (Article 110) start only in the Lok Sabha. The Rajya Sabha can recommend, not finally block, a Money Bill in the usual teaching.
- A government needs the confidence of the Lok Sabha, not the Rajya Sabha.
- The Speaker presides over the Lok Sabha; the Vice-President is the Rajya Sabha’s Chairman.
- Vice-President as of these notes: C. P. Radhakrishnan (from September 2025).
- Prime Minister after 2024: Narendra Modi, third term — depends on Lok Sabha support.
- Universal adult suffrage: 18 years (61st Amendment). First-past-the-post in single-member constituencies.
- Delimitation Commission redraws seats; a long freeze after the 42nd/84th Amendment logic is textbook history. We do not invent a 2026 new 543-breakup by state.
- UTs that send Lok Sabha members include Delhi, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar, Chandigarh, Lakshadweep, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh — exact seat numbers belong on the Election Commission table, not a guessed list here.
- Nominated Rajya Sabha twelve: literature, science, art, social service (Article 80).
- Joint sitting (Article 108) is a deadlock tool for ordinary bills, not for Money Bills or Constitution Amendment Bills in the usual teaching.
- Quorum is one-tenth of the membership of the House — a frequent one-liner; confirm the rule in the articles/rules if a paper is picky.
- We do not print 2026 by-election winners or vacancy counts.
- Anglo-Indian reservation in some state assemblies was also time-bound and linked to the same amendment story — read the 104th text if asked; do not invent state-wise leftovers.
- Lok Sabha constituencies are territorial; Rajya Sabha seats are allotted to states/UTs.
- The Leader of the Opposition is a parliamentary practice with statutory recognition in some laws — not a third house.
- President Droupadi Murmu (15th) summons and prorogues Houses and may dissolve the Lok Sabha, on the constitutional process.
- If a question says “maximum strength”, decide whether it wants Article 81/80 ceilings or today’s 543/245 working numbers.
