Population of India

Ask “what is India’s population?” and honest classroom English still starts with Census 2011: about 1.21 billion (the detailed figure 1,210,854,977 appears in many tables). That census is the last completed official count. The following census was delayed. This desk will not invent a 2026 census total.

State ranks from 2011 remain the ones we will write: Uttar Pradesh first, then (in the usual order students meet) Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh as it then was. Telangana did not exist as a separate state in 2011 — do not force a 2011 row onto a 2014 map without saying so.

UN and other agencies publish estimates that sometimes put India as the world’s most populous country in the mid-2020s. Those are estimates, not an Indian census. If you quote them, label the source. Sex ratio, density and decadal growth below are 2011 textbook extracts, not 2026 results.

7. We may mention that international estimates exist after 2011; we will not baptise them as “Census 2026”.
8. 28 states + 8 UTs is the 2026 political map. Population rows must still say which year’s census they use.
9. J&K’s 2011 row is for the then state; Ladakh was not a separate UT. Do not invent 2026 UT populations.
10. Urban share in 2011 is commonly taught as about 31%. Label the year.
11. National population policy and later programmes are policy history; we do not invent a 2026 fertility rate as census.

15. Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru are the metro names; city populations also freeze at the last census unless a named estimate is used.
16. Do not add Chandrayaan-3 or GST to a population answer.
17. Scheduled Caste / Tribe percentages in 2011 are on the official table — we do not invent 2026 shares.
18. Aadhaar enrolment is not a census.
19. If a paper says “according to Census 2011”, 1.21 billion is the safe order of magnitude.
20. If a paper says “current population 2026” without a source, the honest sentence is that the last completed official census is 2011 and later figures are estimates.
21. September 2026 political offices do not replace the census.
22. Goa is smallest in area, not the population key (Sikkim is the usual least-populous state).
23. Rajasthan is largest in area, not in population (UP).
24. Write the word “Census 2011” on the same line as the number, every time.
