National symbols of India

National animal tiger, bird peacock, flower lotus, tree banyan, anthem Jana Gana Mana, song Vande Mataram, flag Tiranga. Classroom list. GKSchools.

Author: GKSchools Editorial · Last update: 12 September 2026

National symbols are the first static-GK list in every Indian workbook. The locked set on this desk is: animal tiger, bird peacock, flower lotus, tree banyan, anthem Jana Gana Mana, song Vande Mataram, flag the Tiranga. Those seven are the ones we treat as classroom-safe.

The State Emblem is taken from the Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath. The motto Satyameva Jayate comes from the Mundaka Upanishad and is written in Devanagari below the lions. The national river is commonly taught as the Ganga — see the river pages for the longest-river distinction with the Brahmaputra.

Hockey as “national game” appears in older books and is now treated as unofficial or obsolete in careful keys. We do not invent a 2026 replacement sport. Fruit (mango), aquatic animal (Ganges river dolphin) and heritage animal (elephant) show up in many lists — useful, but secondary to the locked seven.

Key points

  1. National animal: tiger (Panthera tigris). The Asiatic lion of Gir is not the national animal.
  2. National bird: peacock (Indian peafowl, Pavo cristatus).
  3. National flower: lotus. National tree: banyan.
  4. National flag: Tiranga — saffron, white, green, with the navy-blue Ashoka Chakra of 24 spokes. Separate page for rules.
  5. National anthem: Jana Gana Mana, written by Rabindranath Tagore. Playing time is commonly taught as about 52 seconds.
  6. National song: Vande Mataram, by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay (from the novel Anandamath in the usual teaching).
  7. Emblem: Sarnath Lion Capital. Motto: Satyameva Jayate.
  8. National calendar: Saka Era is the official civil calendar alongside the Gregorian — a frequent extra.
  9. National river (textbook): Ganga. Highest peak in India (classroom): Kangchenjunga, not Everest.
  10. Project Tiger began in 1973 — pair it with the animal, not with the lion.
  11. Currency symbol ₹ (2010) is a money fact, not a “national symbol” in the same NCERT box, but papers mix them.
  12. We do not invent a new 2026 national reptile or a new anthem verse.
  13. The President’s Standard and service flags are not the national flag.
  14. Respect for the flag and the anthem sits among the fundamental duties (Article 51A).
  15. 28 states and 8 UTs each have their own state symbols — do not swap a state animal for the national tiger.
  16. Ganges river dolphin is widely listed as the national aquatic animal; elephant as national heritage animal — useful extras.
  17. Mango is the usual national fruit in school charts.
  18. Tiranga adoption by the Constituent Assembly: 22 July 1947 — flag page has the ratio 2:3.
  19. Do not write Everest under “highest peak of India” on a symbols-plus-geography mixed paper.
  20. September 2026 polity names (Murmu, Modi) are not national symbols.
  21. This list is classroom convention plus the locked facts — not a gazette of every logo the government has ever used.
  22. Related: Indian national flag, Ganga, highest peak.
  23. If two options say lion and tiger, tiger is the national animal; lion is Gir / Gujarat.
  24. Anthem versus song: Jana Gana Mana is the anthem; Vande Mataram is the song. Swap is a classic trap.
