Literacy rate in India

The last completed official Census of India is 2011. The literacy rate recorded then is 74.04 per cent. That is the figure this desk will defend. We do not invent a 2026 national literacy percentage, a new state rank, or a “Census 2026 final” table.

Census 2011 also gives the usual split taught in class: male literacy higher than female (about 82.14 per cent and 65.46 per cent in the standard extract). Kerala sits at the top of the state table in almost every workbook; Bihar is the usual bottom of that 2011 list. Treat those ranks as 2011 ranks.

The next census was delayed. Sample surveys and education-ministry statistics exist, but they are not a substitute for a completed decennial census unless a question names the survey. If you must quote a later estimate, label it as an estimate and name the source — do not write it as “Census 2026”.

Literacy rate in India — facts (2026)

Exam tip: Always write the year beside the percentage: 74.04% (Census 2011). A bare “74% in 2026” is a fabrication.
