Indian exams want a short answer: the longest river in India is the Ganga (Ganges). That is the line to write unless the question clearly asks for the longest river of the Indian subcontinent or the longest course measured from Tibet to the sea.
The Brahmaputra is the usual trap. Measured from its Tibetan source (Yarlung Tsangpo) through Arunachal and Assam into Bangladesh, its total length can exceed the Ganga. A large share of that length is not “in India”. Careful keys therefore keep Ganga as the India classroom answer and mention the distinction in a line, which is what this page does.
The Godavari is the longest river of peninsular India and is nicknamed Dakshin Ganga. Do not promote it over the Ganga for an all-India “longest” question. Kilometre figures in coaching charts drift; we do not invent a 2026 resurvey.
