Tropic of Cancer in India

Tropic of Cancer (23½°N) crosses eight Indian states: Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura, Mizoram.

Author: GKSchools Editorial · Last update: 12 September 2026

The Tropic of Cancer is the 23½° N parallel — the northern limit of the tropical zone in the school diagram. In India it is a matching-list question: which states does it cut? The locked eight are Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura and Mizoram.

West to east is the sensible order to memorise. The line does not pass through Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha or Assam in this standard list — those are the common traps. It also does not decide India’s only time zone. IST is 82.5° E, a meridian, not a tropic.

We do not add a ninth state for 2026 and we do not invent a new latitude. Union territories are not in the eight-name list. The tropic is a climatic idea (tropical versus subtropical) as well as a political-map drill.

Key points

  1. Latitude: about 23°30′ North (23½° N in classroom shorthand).
  2. Eight states, west to east: Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura, Mizoram.
  3. Mnemonic families differ; the names must match this locked eight. Do not invent a ninth.
  4. Not on the list (frequent traps): Maharashtra, UP, Bihar, Odisha, Assam, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh.
  5. UTs are not counted among the eight states. The tropic is a latitude, not a state boundary.
  6. IST is 82.5° E near Mirzapur / Prayagraj — a different line on the map. See the time-zone page.
  7. The tropic crosses the Ganga basin in the east (West Bengal, Jharkhand) but is not the Ganga’s source.
  8. Rajasthan’s Thar and Gujarat’s Rann sit near or south of the line in popular maps — climate colour, not a new state name.
  9. Mizoram and Tripura remind you that the line continues into the North-East after a jump across Bangladesh — a map surprise for many students.
  10. Bangladesh lies between West Bengal and Tripura on this parallel — neighbours page, not a ninth Indian state.
  11. Sun is overhead at the tropic about 21 June (summer solstice in the school model) — a climate one-liner, not a festival.
  12. India has no Tropic of Capricorn. Capricorn is in the southern hemisphere.
  13. 28 states exist; only eight of them are on this list.
  14. We do not invent a 2026 “tropic festival” or a moved latitude because of plate tectonics for a one-mark paper.
  15. Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand (created in 2000) must appear; older keys that named undivided MP or Bihar are outdated.
  16. Telangana (2014) is south of the tropic in the usual map — not in the eight.
  17. This is not live weather for a heat wave in 2026.
  18. Related: states count, time zone, neighbours (Bangladesh sits on the same latitude belt).
  19. If a paper shows a blank map, mark a belt through central India, not through Kashmir or Kanyakumari.
  20. Kanyakumari is near 8° N — Cape Comorin, not the tropic.
  21. Delhi is north of the tropic. Chennai is south. Kolkata is near the line — a useful city check.
  22. Do not confuse the tropic with the Prime Meridian or with the Arctic Circle.
  23. Kangchenjunga is far north of 23½° N; the tropic is not a Himalayan fact.
  24. Write the eight names in order at least once a week until they stick.
