Ganga river

Ganga is India’s national river and the classroom “longest in India”. Bhagirathi from Gaumukh; named Ganga at Devprayag. Mouth: Bay of Bengal.

Author: GKSchools Editorial · Last update: 12 September 2026

The Ganga is the river Indian students meet first: national river, pilgrimage spine, and the standard answer for the longest river in India. Its story is a chain of names. The Bhagirathi begins at the Gangotri glacier (Gaumukh). Only after the Alaknanda joins at Devprayag is the stream called the Ganga.

From the mountains it crosses the northern plains — Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, a stretch of Jharkhand, West Bengal — and reaches the Bay of Bengal through the great Ganga–Brahmaputra delta. The Hooghly is the Indian arm that keeps Kolkata a river port in the usual teaching. The Padma channel continues into Bangladesh.

The Yamuna meeting at Prayagraj is the Triveni Sangam of tradition (Ganga, Yamuna, and the unseen Saraswati). We do not invent 2026 flood peaks or a new official length. About 2,525 km is the common textbook figure. Namami Gange exists as a cleaning mission; its yearly scores are not printed here.

Key points

  1. National river of India: Ganga. Classroom longest river in India: also Ganga — see the distinction with the Brahmaputra on the longest-river page.
  2. Bhagirathi source: Gaumukh / Gangotri glacier, Uttarakhand.
  3. Name “Ganga” from Devprayag: Bhagirathi + Alaknanda.
  4. Other Prayags in the upper course (Vishnuprayag, Nandprayag, Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag, Devprayag) are a Himalayan matching list.
  5. Yamuna joins at Prayagraj. Ghaghara, Gandak, Kosi are large left-bank Himalayan tributaries in the usual list; Son is a major right-bank peninsular tributary.
  6. Farakka barrage is the textbook engineering name near the Bengal border — not a 2026 news event.
  7. Sundarbans: mangrove mouth shared with Bangladesh; tiger habitat — parks page.
  8. Himalayan origin makes the Ganga perennial. Summer melt plus monsoon rain is the two-pulse classroom model.
  9. Do not write Mount Everest as the Ganga’s source. Everest is not in India and is not Gangotri.
  10. Ganges river dolphin is widely listed as the national aquatic animal.
  11. We do not invent a 2026 “Ganga water quality index” number.
  12. Cities on the banks in almost every map drill: Haridwar, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Patna, Kolkata (Hooghly).
  13. Ganga basin supports a huge share of India’s people on Census 2011 maps — we still do not invent a 2026 basin population.
  14. Brahmaputra meets the Ganga system in the Bengal delta, not at Prayagraj.
  15. Godavari is the Dakshin Ganga — a nickname, not this river.
  16. Kilometre length: use a named textbook or yearbook if an exam demands a number; do not treat a coaching WhatsApp figure as a 2026 survey.
  17. The river is a cultural fact (ghats, Kumbh at Prayagraj/Haridwar in the usual cycle) and a geography fact — keep the two layers if a paper mixes them.
  18. West Bengal and the Tropic of Cancer: the tropic crosses the state; that is a latitude fact, not a Ganga source fact.
  19. Neighbours: Bangladesh shares the delta. China is the Brahmaputra’s upper-course neighbour, not the Ganga’s source state.
  20. This page is not live disaster news.
  21. Related: longest river (the exam trap), Himalayas (headwaters), national parks (Sundarbans).
  22. Article 51A duties do not name the Ganga; “national river” is a declared/textbook status, not a fundamental right.
  23. If asked “where does Ganga begin as Ganga?”, write Devprayag, not Gaumukh.
  24. Hooghly versus Padma: one Indian distributary name, one Bangladesh name — a clean matching pair.

The Bhagirathi rises at Gaumukh (Gangotri glacier). The name Ganga is used from Devprayag, after the Alaknanda joins.
