The Himalayas
Young fold mountains: Himadri, Himachal, Shiwalik. Kangchenjunga is India’s highest classroom peak. Source of Ganga, Yamuna, Brahmaputra, Indus.
The Himalayas are young fold mountains raised by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates — the NCERT origin story. For Indian exams they are a wall, a water tower, and a three-band diagram: Himadri (Greater Himalaya), Himachal (Lesser Himalaya), and Shiwalik (Outer Himalaya).
India’s classroom highest peak, Kangchenjunga, stands in this chain on the Sikkim–Nepal border. Everest, though Himalayan, is not an Indian peak. Trans-Himalayan ranges (Ladakh, Zaskar, Karakoram in the wider teaching) sit north of the Great Himalaya.
The Indus, Ganga, Yamuna and Brahmaputra all tie back to this highland. Passes such as Nathu La, Shipki La and Zoji La are matching-list staples. We do not invent a 2026 expedition, a new pass road opening date, or a fresh height for Kangchenjunga.
Key points
- Young fold mountains; plate-collision origin in the school model.
- Three longitudinal belts: Himadri, Himachal, Shiwalik (Greater, Lesser, Outer).
- Himadri: highest snow-bound ranges; Kangchenjunga sits here in the east.
- Himachal: hill stations in the usual examples (Shimla, Mussoorie, Darjeeling — check which belt your book assigns).
- Shiwalik: outermost, youngest, foothill zone; dun valleys (Dehradun is the classic example).
- Trans-Himalaya / Karakoram: taught as a northern belt; K2 is not the “highest in India” key.
- Highest peak in India (classroom): Kangchenjunga. Not Everest.
- Highest entirely within India (usual): Nanda Devi, Uttarakhand.
- Rivers: Indus system, Ganga–Yamuna, Brahmaputra (Tsangpo in Tibet).
- Ganga name from Devprayag; Bhagirathi from Gangotri — river pages.
- Eastern Himalaya meet the Brahmaputra bend in Arunachal–Assam in the usual map story.
- Passes (taught): Zoji La (J&K/Ladakh side), Shipki La (Himachal–Tibet), Nathu La and Jelep La (Sikkim–Tibet). Confirm a pass on a map rather than inventing a 2026 new name.
- Nepal and Bhutan are Himalayan neighbours; China lies across the high frontier (LAC is the working line — not a 2026 news brief).
- Western Himalaya (J&K, Ladakh, Himachal, Uttarakhand) versus Eastern Himalaya (Sikkim, Arunachal) is a regional split papers use.
- Cloudbursts and glaciers are physical facts; we do not invent a 2026 disaster death toll.
- Alpine vegetation belts and snow line rise from west to east in many books — direction, not a fake metre.
- Kanchenjunga National Park / Khangchendzonga is a protected-area name students may meet; exact IUCN label can change — do not invent a 2026 count of Himalayan parks.
- The Himalayas are not the Western Ghats. Do not mix UNESCO sentences without the name of the range.
- IST is one zone for the whole country; sunrise is simply earlier in the eastern Himalaya.
- This page is not a trekking blog and not live weather.
- Related: highest peak, Ganga, neighbours.
- 28 states include several Himalayan states; J&K and Ladakh are UTs since 31 October 2019.
- If asked “youngest fold mountains of India”, Himalaya is the stock answer (with the Aravallis as old folded remnants in many keys).
- Do not date a 2026 Chinese or Indian patrol as a geography fact here.
The Himalayas — facts (2026)
| Topic | Fact / answer |
|---|---|
| Type | Young fold mountains |
| Three belts | Himadri, Himachal, Shiwalik |
| Highest in India (class) | Kangchenjunga |
| Not an Indian peak | Everest |
| Entirely in India (usual) | Nanda Devi |
| Major rivers sourced | Indus, Ganga, Yamuna, Brahmaputra |
| Classic dun | Dehradun (Shiwalik) |
| Eastern pass pair (taught) | Nathu La, Jelep La |
| 2026 expeditions | Not listed |
Exam tip: Draw the three belts once. Then hang Kangchenjunga on Himadri and Dehradun on Shiwalik — most matching questions fall out of that sketch.
