A road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A apartment. The sisters’ reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book deep in the bowels of Ellie’s building, giving rise to flesh-possessing demons, and thrusting Beth into a primal battle for survival as she is faced with the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable.
The film was initially teased by Sam Raimi while promoting The Grudge in early 2020, stating that himself, Rob Tapert, and Bruce Campbell were working with a "young filmmaker" (refraining from revealing the name) who was writing and directing the next Evil Dead project. It would not be until June 8th, 2020 that Bruce Campbell would reveal the writer/director of the film (Lee Cronin) and the film's working title of Evil Dead Now while giving an interview with Empire magazine. Campbell revealed that his character of Ash Williams would be absent from the film, and that it's story would be completely stand alone and not connected to the original trilogy, Ash vs Evil Dead, or the 2013 film directed by Fede Alvarez.
In November 2018, Álvarez announced that "They're just ideas right now. Nothing to announce officially. We do have a script for Don't Breathe That's the only difference. We don't have a script for Evil Dead But we do have a script for Don't Breathe that we wrote." He also said that "When I tweeted that I was interested in seeing what people prefer. We were having some internal debates about what people would be interested in most. Unfortunately, Evil Dead won. Which, I guess I would have preferred Don't Breathe to win because it's one of my own creations. Obviously Evil Dead has the bigger following." On July 10, 2019, Raimi discussed the future of the Evil Dead franchise, saying that "We'd like to make another Evil Dead feature and in fact we're working on some ideas right now." Raimi said that he would be interested in making another film with Campbell, however, Campbell earlier claimed that he has retired from the role of Ash. He said another option would be a sequel to the 2013 reboot, however, he is unsure if Álvarez would want to make a sequel at this point because the director is a successful "artist in demand"
In an interview with Diabolique magazine released on June 23rd, 2020, Bruce Campbell revealed that following a new draft of the script, the film had been re-titled to Evil Dead Rise, and hoped it would be in production by 2021. Campbell also stated that the film would not take place in a cabin like the previous films. The film's setting was later officially revealed by Campbell during a Q&A in September, 2020, where he specified that it would be set in a city. This information regarding the setting had already been circulating online as a rumor for several weeks prior.
